Who was Caryll Houselander?
An English convert, an artist, illustrator and writer, she lived in London an intense and original faith, at the edges of established forms. During the war she accompanied, by her letters and her presence, many wounded souls whom even doctors entrusted to her. In The Reed of God she describes the soul as a hollow reed offered to the breath of the Spirit.

It is emptiness like the hollow of a reed, the narrow riftless emptiness which can have only one destiny: to receive the piper's breath and to utter the song that is in his heart.
We are all asked to surrender what we are, our humanity, our flesh and blood, to the Holy Spirit and to let Christ fill the emptiness formed by the particular shape of our life.
