Who was Édith Stein?
A German Jewish philosopher and assistant to Husserl, she sought truth through phenomenology before converting to Catholicism at thirty, after reading the autobiography of Teresa of Ávila. As a Carmelite under the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, she was arrested by the Nazis in 1942 in reprisal against the Dutch bishops and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. She never disowned her Jewish people, standing before God in the name of all.
