Ellen Lakshmi Goreh

1853-1937 19th century

The hidden place one withdraws to, which fits inside the heart.

Who was Ellen Lakshmi Goreh?

Born in Benares to a Brahmin family that had become Christian, motherless within days, she was raised in England by a missionary couple. She wrote a hymn on the secret of God's presence which passed into hymn books around the world. Returning to India, she taught and worked among the women of Allahabad for more than forty years.

In their own words

In the secret of His presence how my soul delights to hide. Oh, how precious are the lessons which I learn at Jesus' side.

'In the secret of His presence', 1883

Earthly cares can never vex me, neither trials lay me low; for when Satan comes to tempt me, to the secret place I go.

'In the secret of His presence', 1883

Would you like to know the sweetness of the secret of the Lord. Go and hide beneath His shadow: this shall then be your reward.
