Étienne de Hongrie
v. 975-1038 11th century Feast day: August 16
Responsibility lived out before God: governing, deciding, working while remaining a person of prayer.
Who was Étienne de Hongrie?
The first king of Hungary, he unified his people and rooted them in the Christian faith without erasing who they were. For his son Emeric he had Admonitions written, in which the exercise of power is measured by prayer, humility, and the welcome given to strangers. He died entrusting his kingdom to the Mother of God.
In their own words
A kingdom of one single language and one single custom is fragile and weak. Therefore welcome strangers with kindness.
The observance of prayer is the greatest acquisition of a king's salvation.
Be humble in this life, so that God may raise you up in the next.
