Who was George Herbert?
A Welsh gentleman, a brilliant orator bound for the court, he gave up honors to become a humble country parson at Bemerton. There he spent his last years serving his parishioners and writing poems of worked simplicity, published only after his death. The Temple stands among the finest collections of English religious poetry.
