Who was Henriette Delille?
A free woman of color in New Orleans, she refused the place society reserved for women like her in order to give herself to God and to the poorest. She founded the Sisters of the Holy Family, a congregation of Black nuns who catechised and cared for the enslaved and the abandoned elderly.
