Who was Ignacia del Espíritu Santo?
Born in Manila in 1663 to a Chinese father and a Filipina mother, she wanted to enter religious life but no congregation in the Philippines accepted local women. Only Spanish nuns were admitted. So in 1684, with a handful of companions, she simply began: a shared life of prayer and service, without asylum or official recognition. The community grew despite suspicion, investigations, and the archbishop's distrust. It became the first congregation of Filipina religious sisters, later approved by Rome.
