Who was Isaac le Syrien?
Bishop of Nineveh in the 7th century, he resigned after only five months (the exact reason is lost, perhaps a dispute, perhaps something he saw of himself under the weight of authority) and withdrew to the mountains to write. His texts on prayer, discernment, and the human heart traveled across languages and centuries, read today by Christians of nearly every tradition, East and West alike.
