A scholar of forthright temper, he learned Hebrew and Greek and withdrew to Bethlehem to translate the Scriptures into Latin, giving the West the Bible that would be called the Vulgate. His whole life was a wrestling with the Word, which he held to be the very place of encounter with Christ.
