Who was Krupabai Satthianadhan?
Born in 19th-century India to Christian convert parents, she became one of the first Indian women to pursue higher education and a medical path, though chronic illness cut short her studies and eventually her life at just thirty-two. She turned instead to writing, producing some of the earliest English-language novels by an Indian woman, giving voice to the particular loneliness of standing between cultures, too Westernized for one world, never fully accepted into the other.
