Who was Lancelot Andrewes?
An English bishop of immense learning, master of some fifteen languages, he was among the chief architects of the King James translation of the Bible. Far from the honours of the court, he kept a notebook of prayers composed for himself alone, worn soft by tears; these Preces Privatae reveal a man who prayed for hours each day.
