Who was Lucian Tapiedi?
A young Papuan teacher and evangelist, trained in the Anglican schools of New Guinea, he was serving the Sangara mission when the Japanese army invaded the coast in 1942. Rather than flee alone, he stayed with the hunted missionaries. He was killed with an axe near a stream; his statue now stands among the twentieth-century martyrs over the door of Westminster Abbey.
