Marianne de Jésus de Quito

1618-1645 17th century Feast day: May 26

Offering one's life for one's people, praying in secret for the whole city.

Who was Marianne de Jésus de Quito?

Born in Quito, orphaned, she lived as a recluse in her sister's house, in prayer, penance and the service of the sick and of Indian children. In 1645, as an earthquake and an epidemic struck the city, she publicly offered her life for her people. She died soon after, at twenty-six; she is called 'the Lily of Quito.'

In their own words

No, father. This priest's life is needed to save many souls; I am not needed. I offer my life so that these earthquakes may cease.
