Who was Paul Miki?
Son of a Japanese notable, a Jesuit and esteemed preacher, he was arrested in Hideyoshi's persecution and led to Nagasaki with twenty-five companions. Nailed to crosses before the crowd, they sang and prayed. From his cross, Paul Miki preached a last time and forgave his executioners before being pierced by a lance.

The Christian religion bids us forgive our enemies and those who harm us; and so I forgive the emperor and all who are responsible for my death.
After Christ's example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them.
I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall upon my fellow men like a fruitful rain.
