Who was Peter To Rot?
A lay catechist of Papua New Guinea, married and a father, he went on teaching the faith and upholding Christian marriages when the Japanese occupier banned all religious activity and restored polygamy. Arrested for refusing to stay silent, he was put to death in his prison in 1945. The first witness of his people to be raised to the altars, he embodies the hidden fidelity of the laity who keep the faith alive when priests are absent.
