Who was Toribio de Mogrovejo?
A Spanish jurist named, against his will, archbishop of Lima, he governed an immense New World diocese which he crossed tirelessly, often on foot, learning the native tongues. He defended the Indians against the settlers' abuses and reformed the Church of Peru through his councils. He confirmed and formed a whole generation, several of them saints.
