Carlos Manuel Rodríguez

1918-1963 20th century

Ordinary life ordered toward Easter: living each day awaiting the night when all is raised up.

Who was Carlos Manuel Rodríguez?

A Puerto Rican layman of fragile health, an office worker at the university, he made the liturgy the center of his life. Long before the Council, he taught his friends the meaning of the Easter Vigil and the beauty of the night when the Church passes from darkness to light. He died of cancer at forty-four, the first Caribbean layperson to be declared blessed.

In their own words

We live for that night.

His motto on the Paschal Vigil

The liturgy is the life of the Church.
