Chiara Lubich

1920-2008 20th century

Making unity itself a prayer, choosing God even in forsakenness.

Who was Chiara Lubich?

A schoolteacher from Trento, in 1943, under the bombing, she founded the Focolare movement around one intuition: that all may be one. The movement spread across the world and opened to dialogue between Churches and religions.

In their own words

I have only one spouse on earth: Jesus forsaken. I have no other God but him.

Writing of 20 September 1949

That all may be one.

Motto of the movement, from John 17

If we are united, Jesus is among us, and that is worth more than any other treasure.
