Who was Desmond Tutu?
The first Black Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, he became the Christian voice of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, preaching resistance without violence and without hatred. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, after the regime fell he chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where perpetrators and victims faced each other. He held that no one is beyond redemption and that forgiveness is the only viable future.
