Festo Kivengere
1919-1988 20th century
Forgiveness offered to the enemy as a strength, and the joy of the Gospel carried through trial.
Who was Festo Kivengere?
A former Ugandan schoolteacher converted as an adult, an Anglican bishop and preacher of the East African revival, he had to flee Idi Amin days after the murder of his archbishop. He answered terror with a book of startling title, I Love Idi Amin, holding that forgiveness is not weakness but strength.
In their own words
On the cross, Jesus looked at those killing him and said: Father, forgive them. I could do no less.
