Who was Eric Liddell?
Born in Tianjin to Scottish missionary parents, Olympic champion in the four hundred metres in Paris in 1924, he went back to China to teach science and sport in a Tianjin school. Married and the father of two girls, he saw his family evacuated in 1941, his wife expecting the third, whom he would never see; he himself remained in China, in a region at war. He died in a Japanese internment camp at Weifang, where he ran classes and games for the children. He was then writing a small book for young believers.
