Gladys Aylward

1902-1970 20th century

The prayer of the unlikely sent one: to know oneself an improbable choice, and to go all the same.

Who was Gladys Aylward?

A London housemaid turned down by the missionary societies, she paid her own train fare to China and settled in an inn where she told the Gospel to travellers. During the war she led about a hundred orphaned children across the mountains to safety.

In their own words

I wasn't God's first choice for what I've done for China. There was somebody else. But he wasn't willing. And God looked down, and saw Gladys Aylward.

Reported words (public talks)

If God has called you to China, or any other place, and you are sure in your own heart, let nothing deter you.
