Janani Luwum

1922-1977 20th century Feast day: February 17

The word held firm before violence, and the prayer that does not yield to fear.

Who was Janani Luwum?

A Ugandan shepherd who became Anglican Archbishop of Uganda, he raised his voice against the killings of Idi Amin's regime. Summoned with other bishops, he was murdered the next day; his statue now stands among the twentieth-century martyrs at the gate of Westminster Abbey.

In their own words
