Jean de Shanghai et San Francisco

1896-1966 20th century Feast day: July 2

Ceaseless prayer and charity without borders, kept intact under slander.

Who was Jean de Shanghai et San Francisco?

A Russian bishop in exile, he led his people from Shanghai to the Philippines and then to San Francisco, fleeing persecution each time. He slept sitting up, ate once a day, and tirelessly visited hospitals and prisons, without distinction of people or religion. Slandered at the end of his life and dragged before a court, he was fully exonerated, answering injustice without complaint and judging no one.

In their own words

Everything will perish except that which the soul has gathered through love and prayer.

Sermon

God saves His fallen creature by His own love for him, but man's love for his Creator is also necessary.
