Vivian Redlich

1905-1942 20th century Feast day: September 2

Holding one's post when nobody would know, and leaving the outcome to another.

Who was Vivian Redlich?

An Anglican priest from Yorkshire sent to Papua, he learned the Japanese were advancing while he lay ill in the bush. He could have been evacuated; he chose to rejoin his community to celebrate Sunday there. Betrayed and arrested, he was beheaded on a beach along with other missionaries and Papuan catechists.

In their own words

I'm trying to stick whatever happens.

Last letter to his father, 27 July 1942

If I don't come out of it, just rest content that I have tried to do my job faithfully.

Last letter to his father, 27 July 1942

I'm somewhere in my parish, hoping to carry on, though my people are horribly scared.
