Who was Bernard de Clairvaux?
Cistercian monk, abbot of Clairvaux which he founded at 25. Mystic, preacher, advisor to popes, he reshaped Western monasticism. Author of the Sermons on the Song of Songs, where he describes the mystical union of the soul with God as an exchange of love. One of the great theologians of desire.
