Who was Charbel Makhlouf?
A Maronite monk of Lebanon, he left the monastery for the hermitage and lived there twenty-three years in silence, tilling the soil and long prayer. He left almost no writings; it was his self-effacement itself that was remembered. After his death, a light around his tomb and countless graces drew crowds, Christian and Muslim alike.
