Who was Jean l'Aumônier?
A widowed Cypriot, a father who had buried his own family, he was called at sixty to become patriarch of Alexandria. He opened the Church's granaries, had a register of the city's poor drawn up, imposed honest weights and measures in the markets, took in the refugees from captured Jerusalem. He called the poor his masters, and wanted the Church's money to go back to them.
