Who was Takashi Nagai?
A radiologist in Nagasaki, converted to Catholicism through the family of his wife, Midori. Shortly before 9 August 1945 he was diagnosed with leukemia contracted from years of X-ray work; the atomic bomb killed Midori and left him wounded and irradiated in turn. He spent his last years bedridden in a two-tatami hut, Nyokodō ("as yourself"), writing and praying for peace. His books carried the hope of post-war Japan.
