Who was Paula de Rome?
Widow of one of the greatest families in Rome and mother of five, she left everything at thirty-five for Palestine. In Bethlehem she founded monasteries and a hostel for pilgrims, learned Hebrew, and funded Jerome's work of biblical translation. She died poor, having given everything away.
